Chapter 4

Jade

“Alex! Wake up!” I shoved his shoulder before rushing over to find my other shoe.

“Hmm,” he groaned.

“Get up!” I grabbed his exposed ankle and pulled it off of the mattress.

He woke up a little more and sat up, wiping the sleep from his eyes. “What’s going on?” he asked.

“I’m late for work. You gotta get up,” I told him.

Alex woke up a bit more and slid to his feet. He yawned as he walked to the living room. I followed and watched as he picked his clothes up off of the ground. I walked to the kitchen while he got dressed. I put my Poptarts in the toaster and glanced up when he joined me. He gave him a sleepy smile as he approached.

“I’m sorry I made you late,” Alex said. He wrapped his arms around me to give me a hug from the side and kissed my cheek. “I’ll sneak out so hopefully nobody will realize it’s your apartment but you have to promise me something.”

“Oh, yeah?” I asked with a grin. “What’s that?”

“I can see you tonight.” Alex kissed my temple and then kissed my neck. I giggled and pushed away from him.

“You’re trying to start something and get yourself in trouble,” I warned. “I thought you had wedding stuff to get ready for. You’re the best man, right?”

“There’s nothing for me to do tonight. I can get everything ready during the day,” he explained. He stuck out his lower lip and moved closer. “Please.”

“Alright, alright.” I laughed and looked at him. “I’ll be off at 5. Be here around 6? We can order food or something.”

“Sounds like a date.” Alex pulled me against him just as my Poptarts were released from the toaster. He pressed his lips against mine and for a moment, I forgot about my breakfast.

“You better get to work,” he grinned a second later. He peppered another kiss to my lips before heading to the door to get his sneakers.

I watched him, smiling to myself until he left my apartment, and then I quickly grabbed my food, my purse and went to the door. I knew I should give him more time to get away, but I was late. Adam would have my hide.

It was only a few minutes after he left before I snuck out and locked up. I made my way to the pathway and tried to eat and run, literally, but half of my Poptart ended up on the ground.

When I reached the resort, I tried my best to slip into the building undetected. I stopped by the employee break room and went to my locker. I quickly shoved my purse inside and grabbed my chef’s jacket.

As I walked to the door, I scanned the room once more. Nobody was loitering around. I seemed to be in the clear.

I made it to the door and looked out into the hallway. A custodian was at the end with their back to me. The coast was clear. With only a short distance to the kitchen, I rushed out and practically ran to the entrance.
